Reflections for the Week of July 19-23, 2021

Public Works:

• Multiple departments worked together on tree removal following the storms of July 9th.

• Crews continue summer maintenance activities including: street sweeping, sanitary sewer jetting, and alley grading.

• The water main project on Big Horn continues with valve installation and main termination.

• Siding and roofing is being installed at the new Public Works building

• APU’s being run at selected wells to assist in load management.

• Burlington street paving project has begun.

• Six new actuating valves installed at arsenic treatment facilities.

• Excavation for Lift Station “A” is underway.

RSVP:

• A successful food pantry distribution completed in cooperation with NCAP. Cars were lined up early on Second Street from Sweetwater to Potash.

• Staff planned and hosted an extremely successful grand re-opening event at the Senior Center. The event attracted around 75 people and featured live music and food. Staff hopes this event will encourage new individuals to come to the Nutrition Site regularly for meals.

Parks:

• Efforts were focused on preparing Bower Ballfield and Park for hosting the district baseball tournament this weekend. Work included clean up in the parking lot, warning track maintenance, mulching around trees and removing dirt and grass from behind the field.

Pool:

• Brock Brass and Drew Varner were recognized for their efforts to help a swimmer in distress at Big Blue Bay.

Library:

• Patron visits continue to increase.

• Staff is working on ways to increase the Library’s level of community outreach. Fall event planning continues.

• The community has responded well to the introduction of the new meeting room. The community is encouraged to utilize this space for smaller meetings that work well in a less formal environment.

Carhenge:

• Staff is struggling to keep inventory in stock as items are selling much faster than normal- a great sign of tourism recovery!

Museum:

• Staff is developing new promotional materials that will be available for sale in the gift shop.

• Continue to work on inventory and assist visitors with research.

• Visitation numbers continue to be strong.

Electric:

• We have been performing load control on irrigation wells.

• Installed a new three phase underground service at New Alliance Bean.

• Rebuilt the CT metering at Westco Fertilizer plant.

• Continue to work on three phase rebuild on Rock Road and CR 64.

• Continue to fix/replace streetlights damaged during the storm of July 9th as we find them. Citizens are encouraged to report broken streetlights.

Police:

• Criminopoly is underway with Office Yocum getting the first $1000 in department dollars for fixing a light bar after the hailstorm, saving time and money.

• Attended state meeting, providing insight for new 988 system.

• Handled 179 Calls for service during Heritage Days with no major incidents at Heritage Days itself.

Fire:

• Twin City Roofing made temporary repairs to the Fire Station roof.

• Pro Overhead Door replaced a spring on overhead door #3 (biggest door on the Southwest side). Those spring replacements normally have to be ordered, but fortunately they had an acceptable replacement on hand.

• Strang’s Carpet installed linoleum flooring in FD command trailer.

• Five Alliance Firefighter’s wrapping up their Firefighter 1 training this week. They will be testing out with the Nebraska State Fire Marshal Training Division on Sunday and Monday.
