Behind Every Water Main Repair is a Team at Work

Most people have seen it before—a section of roadway closed, heavy equipment parked along the street, and City crews working around a large excavation. While a water main break may seem like a sudden inconvenience, the work happening behind the scenes is anything but simple.

A water main is a large underground pipe that carries water throughout the City’s public water system, delivering clean drinking water to homes, businesses, schools, and other facilities. Although these pipes are built to last for decades, they can occasionally fail due to a variety of factors, including aging infrastructure, freezing and thawing ground conditions, shifting soil, accidental damage during excavation, or flaws in the pipe itself. Often, more than one of these factors contributes to a break.

In Alliance, water mains range widely in age. Some sections of the system date back to approximately 1894, while others have been installed recently as part of ongoing infrastructure improvement projects. Replacing aging water mains remains one of the City’s most effective ways to improve reliability and reduce future emergencies.

When a water main break is reported, time is critical. Water and Sewer Department crews typically begin responding within minutes. Before arriving on scene, they gather important information such as the size, material, and age of the water main, identify nearby shutoff valves, and determine how many homes or businesses could be affected by a temporary water outage.

The repair process begins long before any digging takes place. Crews contact Nebraska 811 so underground utilities can be marked before excavation begins, helping protect gas, electric, communications, and other buried infrastructure. Once on site, employees secure the work area with barricades, isolate the damaged section of water main by shutting off the appropriate valves, and notify nearby residents or businesses if water service will be interrupted.

Finding the exact location of the break is not always as straightforward as it may appear. While water often rises directly above the damaged pipe, it can also travel underground before reaching the surface. In areas with concrete streets or other hard surfaces, crews may need to excavate and follow the pipe until the damaged section is located.

Once the break has been identified, crews excavate around the pipe, remove the damaged section, and install a new piece of pipe using specialized repair clamps. If service lines within the excavation area have also been affected, they are repaired or replaced at the same time. Throughout the process, employees use a variety of specialized equipment, including backhoes, skid steers, dump trucks, hydro-excavation equipment, repair trailers, and hand tools.

After the repair is complete, the work is not over. Water service is restored slowly while a nearby fire hydrant is opened to flush the system and remove any debris that may have entered the pipe during repairs. The repaired section is also chlorinated to help ensure the water remains safe before the excavation is backfilled, compacted, graded, and cleaned.

Although some repairs can be completed in as little as four hours under ideal conditions, many take much longer. Depending on the location, weather, surrounding utilities, and complexity of the repair, crews may spend 20 to 30 hours restoring service. One of the longest parts of the process is often waiting for underground utilities to be marked before excavation can safely begin.

Safety remains a top priority throughout every repair. Crews wear protective equipment, properly shore or slope trenches to prevent cave-ins, carefully work around underground utilities, and establish traffic control to protect both employees and the traveling public.

Residents can also help keep everyone safe by slowing down when approaching a work zone, watching for employees and equipment, and following traffic control devices. Because crews often arrive before full road closures are in place, drivers are encouraged to remain alert whenever they encounter standing water or emergency utility work.

While a water main break may only be visible for a short time, the response behind it is the result of careful planning, specialized equipment, and the coordinated efforts of multiple City employees. Whether the repair takes four hours or thirty, crews work as quickly and safely as possible to restore water service and return the area to normal.
