Two of the small children of Gregory Zurn had a remarkable escape from serious injury last Friday evening. While their father was tying the horse in front of Chas. Brann’s store a firecracker was thrown against the animal by a thoughtless boy, and the horse dashed up the street with the cart and two children at a break-neck pace.

The Alliance Auto Supply Company transferred its stock into the new building next door to the old location the first part of the week and soon will have things nicely arranged and ready for business on the same scale. The old place will be used as a sales room by the Rumer Motor Company.

Conductor William Zollinger was sitting beside an open window as passenger train No. 43 wended its way to Alliance Saturday afternoon. Passengers noticed him sneeze and then jump and pull the bell cord. “My false teeth went out the window,” explained the conductor as he signaled for a back up. The train was backed up for a considerable distance and the conductor spent several minutes looking for his molars, but they could not be found.

Hemingford may have a swimming pool. Some o the business men are boosting for such an improvement at the neighboring city and several have offered to donate work and time. The prospects for a pool there are very favorable.

Capt. Earl W. Barnes of Barksdale Feld, La., arrived in Alliance this morning in one of the United states Army’s newest type airplanes, a P-26 pursuit plane. The plane is being stored at the municipal airport until 1 a.m., Saturday, when Capt. Barnes will take-off for Denver and Louisiana.

The installation of new power lights for night baseball at Bower field is almost completed. As soon as this work is finished, a special baseball game will be played each week. If the lights are installed before the end of the week, there is a chance that a game will be played this week.

Police Judge Frank Broome this morning served notice on Claude Attaway to leave town. Police records show that this man has been arrested for intoxication four times in the past two months.

An Alliance family is wondering if birds living in a nest outside of their home are fearful of a bird housing shortage next year. Hanging from the nest is a tag which the family says is a reservation for the same spot come next spring.

Moving of the Alliance Post Office to temporary quarters in the Reddish Building at Second and Box Butte Avenue has been delayed pending the arrival of interim fixtures, Postmaster Fred Feagins announced today. A contract for $294,400 to enlarge and remodel the present Post Office structure at Fourth and Box Butte was awarded recently to the Conditioned Air Corporation of Des Moines, Ia.

Alliance municipal utilities have been operating at near capacity, according to a report received at noon today from City Manager r. W. Laing. On Monday an all-time record was set here with 161,910 kilowatt hours of power delivered. This broke a 1965 record of 157,000 kwh delivered in a single 24-hour period.

Northwestern Bell Telephone Co., manager R. L. Chadwick, said today that telephone users could get better service during the strike by dialing their own long distance calls and by referring to their telephone directory for needed numbers rather than calling directory assistance.

A boiler explosion at the City Power Plant Thursday morning just before 9 a.m. shut down operation of one turbine at the plant and left most of the city without electricity for about 40 minutes. John Foster, head of the city utilities department, said the boiler for the No. 4 turbine blew up and shut off power to the entire city with the exception of an area in the northwest which receives power form the new city substation.

During a meeting with Charles B. Strum, senior project engineer of the TranSystems Engineers and Planners, the inter-governmental grade separation study committee agreed on the preliminary plan for the grade separation project. The group decided that the best choice would be to build an overpass over 10th Street, close 25th Street crossing and pave the Stricker Road one mile north of 25th Street from highway 2 to Highway 385.

At 12 p.m. today, United Way began its second annual “Stuff the Bus” campaign to generate new supplies for schools in Box Butte County. The campaign allows the community to donate new school supplies in an effort to fill a school bus parked at the Alliance Plaza parking lot west of Third and Cody.

One year after a storm brought damage to multiple residences and vehicles in Box Butte County, Mother Nature performed a repeat, sending large hail and heavy wins to sweep the county. On July 9, Box Butte County witnessed two rounds of heavy storms that caused damage to windows, roofs and vehicles.
