June 28, 1895

Dr. Lewis informs us of two accidents that might have proven serious had the weather been less cool recently. The child of E. Preston stepped upon a nail last week and an ugly wound resulted. The doctor applied the knife and the little fellow was around in a day. Last Saturday a daughter of D. E. Colvin fell upon two nails and a very ugly wound in one limb was the result, but timely attention was given the injury and no serious consequences resulted.

June 28, 1910

Regarding the discharging of fire arms, fire-crackers, torpedoes, or other fire works of any description on the street of Alliance, known as Box Butte avenue. At a meeting of the Alliance City Council on the night of June 24th, the mayor approved an order prohibiting the firing of the above mentioned articles on the above named street, commencing on date of June 25, 1910.

July 2, 1915

Two houses in Alliance were struck with lightning Thursday morning as a result of the electric storm which visited the city. A chimney was knocked off the M. D. Nichols residence and the house of M. F. Donovan on the west side of town was struck. Fifty dollars would cover the damage to both houses.

June 29, 1920

Jack Reynolds of Cedar Rapids, Ia., defeated Pete Buzukos of San Francisco two out of three falls for the welterweight wrestling championship of the world here Friday night. The bout was staged in the open air on the roof garden.

Considerable support comes to the suggestion to gravel the city’s streets, following the article in a recent issue of the Times-Herald. Several property owners have pointed out the excellent condition of the graveled highways in all kinds of weather as compared with the city streets and they anxiously await the decision of the council on this important topic.

June 27, 1930

A crowd of 5,000 people witnessed the visit in Alliance on Wednesday of the 45 airplanes in the fleet of the second All-Nebraska air tour and everybody conceded it to be one of the most interesting exhibitions of air craft ever seen in this section of the west.

Although not finished in every detail, the city’s new electric fountain located at the southeast corner of the swimming pool block, has been operating evenings this week, entertaining crowds with soft, beautiful color effects.

Gordon Kellogg this morning became the first among the 10 young men taking flight training at the Alliance airport to sprout his wings, completing his first solo flight under the watchful eye of Instructor Ralph Burton on the ground.

Al Garrett of Las Vegas, Nevada, won championship honors and Frank Person of Fort Robinson drew second money in all-round cowboy competition during the two-day show of the fifth annual Alliance rodeo Saturday and Sunday. A native of Alliance, Garrett moved to Las Vegas a little over a year ago.

June 30, 1950

The city council moved forward toward the securing of parking meters to be placed along 31 blocks of curb in the downtown district at their regular meeting Thursday evening. An ordinance providing for the meters to be placed on local streets, and including descriptions of violations and penalties in connection with their use, was adopted.

June 29, 1955

Alliance gained 31 acres of land Tuesday night. The School Board in special meeting, voted to annex the site of the new junior high school to the city. With past differences settled, annexation by the City Council is expected forthwith.

E. J. Brown, biology instructor at Alliance High School for the past seven years, was elevated to the Junior High School principal-ship Tuesday night by the Board of Education. Brown, who also served as vice-principal at Senior High School the past year, will assume duties at the beginning of the school term in September.

June 29, 1965

An Alliance man, George Chaney, rescued four fishermen when their boat swamped in rough water and windy weather at Lake McConaughy. The boat later sank and has not been recovered. The boat swamped about 100 yards from shore but a strong south wind blew it out toward the middle of the lake.

Capacity crowds are virtually assured for Wednesday’s two-performance International Shrine Circus at the Sandhillo Rodeo Grounds, according to chairman Don Phillips. Phillips said advance ticket sales are “well above last year and going fast.”

June 27, 1975

Twenty more motel rooms plus a Grampy’s Pancake House are in the plans for the West Way Motel, managers Mr. and Mrs. Robert Redding announced Friday. The addition to the motel is already under construction, the managers said, and work on the restaurant is scheduled to start soon.

Three times in five days, spray plane pilots have revved their engines in a predawn stillness at the Alliance Municipal Airport, only to shut them down without bombing a single grasshopper. The weather, windy on Monday and Wednesday and foggy on Friday, hasn’t been ideal for spraying the 300,000 acres of range-land signed up in six area counties for the APHIS project.

Alliance City engineer Kurt Klein said all 17 soil testing results have turned up “neutral” after more than 6,000 gallons of soap-like detergent was reported leaking a week ago at the Burlington Norther facility here.

Hemingford’s water storage came close to empty Monday, according to Dan Swanson, village utilities superintendent. For the three wells, the total pumping load in 24 hours was 1,321,820. On Tuesday, two wells ran continuously for 24 hours and the other ran 10 hours. Swanson said Hemingford residents are reaching the capacity of the three wells.

The American Heart Association will host a Crimes of the Heart event at Hardee’s in Alliance on Thursday, June 28, from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. Thirty “criminals” will go before the judge, Jim Osche. Bail is set at $100 for each “criminal.” Those who do not raise the entire bail will be “sentenced” by Judge Osche. Those who do raise $100 will get a t-shirt and a picture of themselves “in jail.”

At 2:36 a.m. Monday, an unidentified person telephoned a bomb threat at DAYCO to the Alliance Police Department, according to DAYCO Human Resource Manager Byron Yarborough. Alliance Police Chief John Kiss said that the caller was a person trying to disguise their voice and stated that there was a bomb at DAYCO.

Box Butte General Hospital’s Convenient Care service will be discontinued and close its door’s tomorrow, July 1. The move was discussed during this past Monday’s regular meeting of the BBGH Board of Trustees. However, the physician and physician assistant staffing will remain the same, Monday through Friday 5-10 p.m. and the hospital will continue to offer weekend physician coverage.

Nayelly Tellez and Claudia Leal are both happy to have had the opportunity to be chosen to participate in the teacher exchange program that brought the two of them together in Alliance. Both women are from Monterrey, Mexico, a city of some 3.7 million people, and did not know each other until they were selected to teach at the migrant school program here.

Some traffic at the Alliance Municipal Airport the past two weeks has been slower, with no wings or propellers. Trucks and machinery have methodically paced back and forth along the runways during a rehabilitation project. “The plan for he airport is not to have all runways closed at the same time so the airport can still be utilized.

On Friday, the Nebraska Supreme Court accepted Jon Worthman’s voluntary resignation of his law license, and ordered him and ordered him disbarred from practicing law in the State of Nebraska. Worthman, who served as the Box Butte County Public Defender, was arrested in January after an incident on Jan. 7 in which Worthman purchased one ounce of cocaine from an informant, according to court records.
