Strong performances on both the offensive and defensive sides in the second half powered AMS past Chadron 20 to 14 in football action on Saturday. Alliance trailed 14 to 0 at half but shutout the Cards in quarters 3 and 4 in getting their first win of the season. The Bulldog offense was also stout in final half, scoring three times. With the win, the Dogs improve to 1 and 1 on the year. The game was played at Bulldog stadium.
All Cardinals early. The guests scored at the three minute mark to surge ahead 6 to 0. AMS got a tackle for a loss by Oscar Armendariz on the opening drive but it was Chadron who struck first. Alliance defensive end Bo McCune would stop the PAT as the Dogs trailed by 6. In the second, Alliance again was turned away. Chadron slowly marched down the field in closing minutes of the half. A seven yard TD pass ended the drive with the visitors increasing their margin. The point after was good and the half closed with the Bulldogs down 14 to 0.
Momentum for Alliance came on D. A sack by Bulldog Karson Leisy got the comeback started. On offense, McCune connected to Liam Pena for a big gain. The play ended inside the Chadron 5 yard line. McCune would score from the one and with 3:23 left in the period, the Dogs were down just by 8. Chadron again was denied on their next drive as the Alliance defense flex their muscles. Alliance then turned to its running game. A 20 yard scamper by back Dreyton Perez began the possession. From midfield, AMS got the back to Perez who scored from the 50. McCune added the extra point which tied the contest at 14 with one minute left in the period.
Chadron began the fourth with no scores while the AMS O went to work. A 22 yard pass from McCune to Vincent Burger got the hosts close. The rally ended with a 3 yard running score by Perez with under no minutes remaining. Alliance failed on the PAT. On the Card’s final drive, Chadron got past midfield but was stopped on fourth down. The final seconds had the Bulldogs in victory formation.
