Game 2 for the Alliance Juniors at the state tournament had the Spartans facing off against Holdrege. Five runs in both the second and third innings powered the Peltz Co past Phelps Medical Group 13 to 5. The contest was played Sunday in Wayne. Alliance improves to 1 and 1 at the tourney. Four hurlers toed the rubber with Kyler Hamel getting the start and going 2 frames. Also tossing were: Jackson Devlin, Logan Freiberger, and Casyn Rodriguez. The Juniors closed with 10 knocks and were led by Tanner Salcido who closed with three. Jace Jensen added 2.
Alliance hit first and had success with three tallies. Jackson Shelmadine walked and crossed after an error by Holdrege. An RBI double by Jensen then made it 2 to 0. The scoring concluded with a run scoring knock by Jaxon Poss. Phelps Medical went down silently in the home half and the affair went to second with the Peltz Co up by 3.
In the second, the Spartans went up by 8 with 5 more scores. Walks to Israel Garcia and Teagen O’Gorman set the table for Miguel Galvan whose single made it 4 to 0. Knocks by Salcido and Jensen put the Holdrege deficit at 5. A passed ball along with a couple of miscues by Phelps Medical ended the rally with the Spartans ahead 8 to 0. Hamel had a K in a scoreless bottom of the second to keep the Juniors out in front. Alliance also spun a double play in the frame.
Frame three was another good one for the Peltz Co. Alliance had a 5 spot to go up 13 to 0. Once again it was free passes to Garcia and O’Gorman that started the scoring. An error by Holdrege, a hit by Salcido, and a passed ball resulted in 2 more tallies for the Spartans. Up 10, the Juniors then got a 2 run double by Rodriguez to added to their advantage. Alliance‘s final run came after an RBI double by Braden Clark. Holdrege got one into the scoring column in the home half. Salcido, from his catcher’s position, would throw out a runner on the bases and the ball game went to the fourth with the Juniors ahead 13 to 1
Both innings 4 and 5 had the Spartans go scoreless while the Phelps Medical Group got 2 in each of the frames. O’Gorman singled in the 4th but was stranded. Holdrege pushed 2 across in the bottom of the inning to make it a 13 to 3. In their last attempt in the top of the fifth, the Peltz Co got a double by Salcido and no scores. Phelps plated 2 in the home half but it wasn’t enough. Final. Alliance 13
